Pastes, Relines, And Implants – What Will Fix Your Denture Fit?

Posted on

Your dentures are supposed to make your life a little better. They're supposed to make it possible to have a conversation without worrying about your appearance. They're supposed to make it easier to eat foods that you enjoy and they're supposed to slow the loss of bone. If the dentures don't fit right, they won't do any of this for you. Here, you'll learn a little about the problems commonly experienced with dentures and what you can do to improve the fit.

Chewing Problems

If your dentures don't fit as they should, they will not stick to your gums whenever you chew. Instead, they could stick to the food that you're eating. Another problem is that the food gets trapped under the denture plate and makes it very uncomfortable to chew anything else until you remove the dentures and clean them off.

Lower dentures can be significantly more difficult to keep in place when you're chewing. This is because the lower denture has much less support than the top.

Bone Density Issues

Each year, the bones in your mouth that support the dentures will shrink a bit. If you do nothing to fix the fit, the loose dentures will cause the bone to wear down much faster. The denture will need to be relined and/or adjusted to make sure that they have the support that they need from the bones in your mouth.

Loss of Remaining Teeth

If you still had some of your natural teeth when you first got your dentures, you could face a problem if you lose one of your existing teeth. Without that tooth, the denture won't fit as it should and you'll need to get some work done to replace it.

How to Resolve the Problems

There are a few things that you can do to improve the fit of your dentures.

Paste – Apply a little bit of denture paste to the upper and lower plate. This will help to keep the denture in place and prevent food from making its way under the plates.

Relining – Your dentist can reline your denture. This means that he'll add some material to the underside of the plate, press it into your mouth, and trim things up. When he's done, the dentures will fit better than they did the first day you put them in.

Implant Supports – Instead of messing around with pastes every single day, you can have an implant support put in place. This is a small piece that's drilled into the bone in your mouth and has a clip put on the top of it instead of a tooth. This clip connects to your dentures and holds them securely in place. Implants can also be used to replace the teeth that you've lost since you've gotten your dentures.

Talk with your dentist about improving the fit of your dentures. There's no reason to continue dealing with the problems when there are so many ways to eliminate them.
