Reduce Discomfort Associated With An Abscess And Remain Calm And Collected While Being Treated By A Dentist

Posted on

If you have an abscess next to one of your molars, which is resulting in severe pain that is making it difficult to eat or speak, the following tips will increase your comfort level prior to a dental appointment to have the pus-filled blister drained. If you are nervous about meeting with a dentist to have the procedure completed, additional advice that follows the tips will help you remain calm and collected on the day of your appointment.

Salt Water Rinse And Cooling Gel Pack

Salt is a mineral that is often praised for its pain relieving qualities and ability to prevent infections. Whenever you experience discomfort that is hindering you from relaxing or sleeping, fill a small cup with moderately warm water and add a few spoonfuls of iodized salt to the cup.

Once the salt has dissipated, pour a little of the water into your mouth. Work the salt water against the abscess by slowly using your tongue to move the water around in your mouth. Afterward, spit out the water and apply a cooling gel pack against your cheek. As the cool gel comes into contact with your skin, your mouth will experience a numbing sensation which will reduce physical distress.

Non Spicy Foods And A Liquified Diet

Foods that contain spices, such as pepper, paprika, or cumin, can irritate the pustule in your mouth and cause your condition to worsen. Avoid eating spicy foods and replace them with items that are made with bland ingredients that are easy to digest. To prevent moving your mouth rapidly while attempting to chew foods, opt to exchange your standard diet for one that is liquified. Soup, stew, gravy, or ice cream are some foods that will not require much chewing and that will satisfy your hunger.

A List Of Questions, Anesthesia, And Audio Recordings

Before meeting with a dentist to have the abscess drained, think of a list of questions that you want to ask the specialist so that you are more comfortable with the procedure that you have elected to have performed. For instance, if you are concerned about aftercare steps or continued discomfort while healing is taking place, the dentist will provide you with advice that will promote healing and may mention medication that will be prescribed to assist with maintaining your comfort level soon after the procedure is performed.

If anesthesia is offered to you during your dental appointment, consider accepting a dose of it to assist with numbing the painful area. For additional relief during your appointment, bring along some audio recordings of inspirational music or peaceful sounds and listen to them as you are being treated by a dentist.
