A Few Habits That May Cause You To Need A Cosmetic Dentist

Posted on

Cosmetic dentistry includes treatments and procedures such as orthodontia, teeth whitening, veneers, bonding, and crowns. While you may take excellent care of your teeth, brushing and flossing as recommended, you may have other habits that damage your teeth to the point of needing cosmetic dentistry to keep your smile beautiful. Here are a few things you need to change or quit in order to avoid destroying your teeth.

Bulimia

Eating disorders are never good for your health. If you are causing yourself to vomit to avoid gaining weight you need to seek medical and psychological help. In addition, the constant flow of stomach acid and vomit against your teeth can erode the enamel. This will not only make your teeth discolored and sensitive, it can also cause your teeth to become loose and fall out. Once you have learned to control the urge, see a cosmetic dentist to find out what can be done to restore your smile.

Teeth Grinding

If you grind your teeth while sleeping, you are changing the alignment of your teeth as well as damaging them. As the enamel is worn away you will be more prone to cavities that will further destroy them. A cosmetic dentist can bond the damaged teeth to prevent any bacteria from entering and restoring their alignment so you do not have an over or under bite. Once the bonding is complete, you will need to wear a mouth guard at night to avoid further damage.

Smoking

In addition to turning your teeth an ugly brown color regardless of your oral hygiene, smoking will also cause a build up of tartar. This will cause cavities and loose teeth. While your dentist can take care of a cavity with a filling, the cosmetic dentist may be needed to restore the tooth to its normal shape and size. This can be done with bonding, crowns, or veneers. Smoking is never a good thing for your overall health and you should quit. Do not make the change to chewing tobacco, as this is just as bad for you and even worse for your teeth.

Talk to your dentist about things you do that have an effect on your teeth. The first thing you need to do is stop the bad habit. Once you have quit or found a way to rectify the problem, visit a cosmetic dentist to restore your smile to its beautiful glory.
