2 Tips To Help Reduce Bleeding After A Ridge Augmentation Procedure

Posted on

A ridge augmentation procedure involves creating several surgical sites in order to transfer bone and tissue from the roof of your mouth to site where your tooth was extracted from. This can result in moderate bleeding after the procedure is complete. If you wear a stent after the surgery, then it will fill up with blood the first few days after surgery. This stent should not be removed until you get confirmation from your dentist. The blood should reduce on its own once the area begins to heal. However, this can take some time. Fortunately, there are a few tips that you can use to help.

Apply Pressure to Your Surgical Sites

A simple way to get your bleeding under control immediately after ridge augmentation surgery is by applying pressure to the surgical sites. Place damp gauze on your surgical site, and use your teeth or hand to hold it in place for at least an hour. Make sure that the gauze does not fall between your teeth and stays on the surgical site. If you are wearing a stent then the pressure should be applied directly on the stent. Once the gauze becomes drenched in blood, you can replace it with fresh gauze. The more pressure you apply and the longer you hold the gauze on your surgical site, then the faster that the bleeding will subside.

Apply a Tea Bag to the Surgical Site

A blood clot is a positive sign that your surgical site will begin healing. Once a blood clot forms around your extraction site, then the bleeding will usually reduce or stop not long after. Therefore, tea bags are often used as a way to clot your blood after a surgical procedure. Tea bags contains tannic acid which functions as an astringent and antibacterial. Tannic acid also has the ability to create blood clots on open surgical sites. In order to use the tea bag, wet it with cold water and apply the bag to your surgical site. Apply pressure to the site using your hands or your teeth. Hold the tea bag there for at least an hour before switching it out for a new tea bag. Repeat this process within the first day after surgery and you should quickly notice a reduction in your bleeding.

Dealing with moderate bleeding after your ridge augmentation can make everyday tasks feel troublesome. Therefore, use these tips to help get your bleeding under control immediately after surgery.
