Home Remedies for Sensitive Teeth
A lot of factors can contribute to sensitive teeth. These include rigorous brushing, acidic foods, plaque and gum disease. Whatever the reason your teeth have become sensitive, it can be painful to deal with. If you are suffering from sensitive teeth, here are some remedies you can try at home to help to ease the discomfort.
Protect Your Enamel From Acids
If your teeth have become sensitive due to eating acidic foods, you can use baking soda to neutralize acids on the enamel of your teeth. Fill a large glass with water and then add at least a quarter teaspoon of baking soda to the water. Use it to rinse your mouth twice per day.
Chew Some Gum
Chewing gum is not always a bad thing, especially if you chew the right kind of gum. Chewing on sugar free gum will encourage the production of saliva which will help to remineralize and harden teeth that have become soft and sensitive. However, the way you chew sugar free gum is very important. Be careful not to chew too hard as this can make your teeth become even more sensitive and lead to further tooth damage.
Create a Toothpaste Shield With Desensitizing Toothpaste
Use a toothpaste that has been especially designed for desensitizing teeth. Coat your teeth with the toothpaste in areas that are sensitive before going to bed each night. Over the course of a few weeks your teeth will become less sensitive.
Prevent Teeth Grinding
If you have a problem with grinding your teeth at night, then you need to be proactive. Grinding your teeth constantly can wear away at your tooth's enamel. This will eventually result in sensitive teeth. In order to prevent this from occurring you should purchase a night guard for your teeth. Night guards can be bought at medical shops, but it is always best to get a night guard that has been custom made by your dentist to fit your teeth, since this will make the night guard more effective.
Use a Fluoride Rinse
Fluoride rinses can be purchased over the counter at your local pharmacy, They can be used at least once per day to reduce tooth sensitivity. However, if you have extremely sensitive teeth you should consider visiting your dentist for a fluoride gel treatment to reduce sensitivity.
Coping with sensitive teeth can be a challenge, because it may make you unable to comfortably enjoy some of your favorite foods. However, with proper care you should be able to reduce or eliminate the sensitivity in your teeth. For more information, consult with your dentist (like those at HC Dentistry).
